Joe Commisso was busy planting an olive grove ready for his retirement on his family’s property at the foot of the Snowy Mountains, outside Dalgety near the region of Beloka, when he discovered a large water aquifer under the ground. After further investigation he was told that the water was of exceptional quality, and was worthy of Mineral Water status. It was then that Beloka Water was founded.
Joe started to explore the possibility of bottling the water and discovered the water was incredibly pristine with a high minerality. Joe put his retirement plans on hold and began the process of testing the water and getting approval from The NSW Department of Primary Industries Office of Water for the extraction of the water. To this day we are well within our extraction license, minimising our impact on the surrounding area.
It was decided to bottle the water right there, at the source, and only in glass bottles to ensure it was as fresh and pure as nature had made it. Today, Beloka is stocked in restaurants, cafes, and bars across Australia, and is enjoyed by discerning drinkers the world over.
Joe arrived in Australia in 1953 from Calabria with his parents and nine siblings. He is the Chairman and CEO of Beloka Water. His father, a stonemason, helped construct the eagle statue that stands outside ASIO headquarters in Canberra.
