Energy Drinks Facts and Myths

A lot of people out there choose to drink energy drinks for a lot of different reasons. Here at Beloka Water, we want to separate the facts from the myths when it comes to these tasty thirst quenchers. We know that a lot of people out there love them, but there’s a lot of reasons to be sceptical of those bottles full of sweet, sweet energy. Which leads us on to our first statement…

Energy drinks give you energy

FALSE.

Whilst there is a certain burst of energy that does come from consuming sugary drinks, this is completely temporary and simply results from the amount of sugar and caffeine that can usually be found in the ingredients list. There will be a short-term rush, followed immediately by a crash when your body no longer has access to the same amount of sugar. For a drink that gives you energy for a longer amount of time, it’s best to choose a simple glass of water. Staying hydrated is the most important thing when it comes to restoring your energy levels.

Only athletes should drink energy drinks

FALSE.

Energy drinks can be a good idea for individuals who are not pursuing sport professionally, but only in very certain circumstances. If you desperately need to up your blood sugars if you’re diabetic, or if you have just completed an activity that required so much physical exertion that you now need to top up those blood sugar levels and electrolytes, then we understand there might be a requirement for a can of your favourite energy drink. In ordinary situations, however, it’s best to stick to water to re-hydrate yourself.

Energy drinks help you concentrate

FALSE.

Anyone that’s been to college has probably spotted the familiar sight of a student bent over a textbook, invariably pulling an all-nighter whilst nursing an energy drink in one hand. There’s an idea that’s come about, perhaps as the result of clever advertising from the energy drinks companies, that energy drinks are the ideal fuel for studying or long stretches of concentration. This just isn’t true. The sugar and caffeine packed into energy drinks will give you an initial rush. However, this is just the feeling you get when your brain is flooded with yummy things like sugar and caffeine, as it tells you to expend lots of temporary energy while you’ve got it. However, consuming such things in large amounts (such as when you consume an energy drink) will quickly lead to a crash when your brain becomes starved of these things again.

Energy drinks are addictive

TRUE.

Whilst energy drinks are not addictive in the same way a drug might be, the slightly heady rush that comes from drinking a beverage packed full of sugar, caffeine and other additives is something that many people do become slightly addicted to. For example, the college student we mentioned in our previous example might quickly find themselves completely dependent on energy drinks in order to study whilst under stress, believing (falsely) that the drink is giving them the ability to do better work. In fact, 30 to 50% of teenagers and young adults say they regularly drink energy drinks in their day-to-day life. Hopefully, young people will understand increasingly that it’s a much safer bet to stay hydrated by drinking water instead.

Energy drinks are bad for you

TRUE.

The amount of sugar found in energy drinks can cause serious long-term damage, especially for sufferers of diabetes or for those who are likely to develop type 2 diabetes. The amount of caffeine that can be found in energy drinks, on the other hand, is more likely to have an almost immediate undesirable effect on the body. Energy drinks contain far more caffeine than a tea or coffee, and are more dangerous due to the fact it’s quite easy to consume several bottles before realising the effect this will have on your body. High amounts of caffeine can cause a faster heart rate, higher blood sugar and anxiety.

Water is better for you than energy drinks

TRUE.

It’s easy to believe we’re a little bias here at Beloka Water, but there’s no denying we’ve got the facts on our side. The water we fill our bottles with is filtered through the mountains near the Kosciuszko National Park in Australia before it reaches your front door. We’re passionate about the pure bottled water we produce, and want people to understand the benefits of drinking water to replenish their energy supplies, rather than a sugary alternative that’s been pumped full of additives. Contact us today to find out more about how you and the employees at your company can enjoy freshly bottled mineral water each and every day.
